Each of the contestants are taken to a pre-Big Brother Diary Room, to introduce themselves to the public, and tell us all a bit about their reasons for joining BB.

[Jan enters the room]

[She perches delicately on the edge of the big red chair, crosses her legs, and clasps her hands over her knee]

BB: NAME?

Jan: Jan Goddard

BB: OCCUPATION?

Jan: CEO of Holby City Hospital Trust

BB: MARTITAL STAUS?

Jan: Single

BB: PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR REASON/S FOR JOINING THE BIG BROTHER HOUSE:

Jan: I see this as an invaluable opportunity for team building with the Accident and Emergency department. The A&E has been plagued by some very… unfortunate incidents recently, like the unexpected resignation of Mr Gallagher, the resident Consultant. Moral within the department is at a low, but here in the Big Brother house, we’ll all get the chance to get to know each other, and hopefully we’ll come out of this with a better appreciation of each other’s skill’s and personalities.

BB: ANY PERSONAL REASONS? REMEMBER THAT NONE OF THE OTHER HOUSEMATES WILL HEAR WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY:

Jan: [She looks slightly agitated by this question, and takes a deep breath] Well, I suppose, I hope that I’ll be accepted into their team. [She fidgets with the hem of her skirt] Alright?

BB: WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT THE OUTSIDE WORLD?

Jan: My cat, Tibbles. I’ve had to leave him with a neighbour. I do hope he’ll be ok… [Looks worried, but it passes quickly}

[Jan leaves, and Duffy enters. She sits nervously on the chair, and hugs her cardigan around her]

BB: NAME?

Duffy: Lisa Duffin, but everyone calls me Duffy.

BB: OCCUPATION?

Duffy: Sister in the Casualty Unit, Holby City Hospital.

BB: MARITAL STATUS?

Duffy: [Looks sad, but keeps eyeline with the camera] Widowed.

BB: PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR REASON/S FOR JOINING THE BIG BROTHER HOUSE:

Duffy: I don’t know, I suppose, I just thought, well, it’ll sound daft…

BB: GO ON…

Duffy: Well, I’ve had a lot of time off work lately, and I feel a bit, um, a bit, not left out exactly, but… OK, I feel left out. They all get along fine without me, and if I don’t join in this ridiculous game, no offence, but it is a bit silly, if I don’t join in, it’ll be another thing that I’m not a part of. So I have to be here, don’t I?

BB: WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT THE OUTSIDE WORLD?

Duffy: My boys. I already miss them. I just hope they understand that I love them. Will they hear this?

BB: YES.

Duffy: OK, Peter, Jake, Paul, I love you boys. I do, and I’ll be back soon, so be good for Granny. I love you. [She blows a couple of kisses at the camera]

BB: THANK YOU DUFFY, PLEASE SHOW IN THE NEXT CONTESTANT.

Duffy: Alright. Bye boys, see you soon.

[Duffy leaves, waving to the camera as she goes, and Anna enters. Anna sits straight down on the chair and pulls her legs up under her]

BB: NAME?

Anna: Anna. Anna Paul.

BB: OCCUPATION?

Anna: Staff nurse

BB: MARITAL STATUS?

Anna: [sighs] Single

BB: PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR REASON FOR JOINING THE BIG BROTHER HOUSE:

Anna: I dunno really. It just sounded like it could be fun, and frankly I’m that fed up with Roxy’s fella, that Hakkan bloke, that I don’t mind moving out for a bit. Loads of my friends are going to be here, it could be well good!

BB: WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT THE OUTSIDE WORLD?

Anna: Um, man this is hard… um, I’m going to miss… I’m going to miss my privacy. Yeah, that’s it. I suppose that, really, I’m quite a private person. It’s gonna be so weird having cameras and stuff about all the time. But pretty cool too, man.

BB: THANK YOU ANNA, PLEASE SHOW IN THE NEXT CONTESTANT.

Anna: Right you are!

[Anna scrambles off the chair and Nikki enters the room, they hug each other on the way past]

BB: NAME?

Nikki: Nikki Marshall

BB: OCCUPATION?

Nikki: Ambulance Technician

BB: MARTITAL STATUS?

Nikki: Um, attached? I’m dating Jack, Jack Vincent you see. What does that make me?

BB: PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR REASON FOR JOINING THE BIG BROTHER HOUSE:

Nikki: Jack wanted me to. Is that good enough? I know it sounds a bit of a dumb reason, but if we stay in the whole time, we’ll have like, weeks and weeks off work together! [Grins] And it always looks pretty fun on TV. Are there chickens here?

BB: YES, THERE ARE EIGHT IN THE GARDEN.

Nikki: Cool! OK, Next question… [Looks eagerly into the camera]

BB: WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT THE OUTSIDE WORLD?

Nikki: Er… my parents probably. Is that really sad? But my friends will be here, and Jack will be, and we get food and stuff, so, I’ll miss my parents most. And Eastenders, but they’re taping it for me.

BB: THANK YOU NIKKI, PLEASE SHOW IN THE NEXT CONTESTANT

Nikki: Oh, is that it? Oh, OK.

[Nikki walks out, Lara enters. She looks tired and fed up already, she sits heavily down.]

Lara: Come on then.

BB: NAME?

Lara: Lara Stone

BB: OCCUPATION?

Lara: Senior House Officer, Holby City Hospital.

BB: MARITAL STATUS?

Lara: [Looks solemn] I lost my fiancé a few weeks ago.

BB: BIG BROTHER IS SORRY TO HEAR THAT. [Lara looks unimpressed] PLEASE EXPLAIN YOU REASON FOR JOINING THE BIG BROTHER HOUSE:

Lara: Simon’s here. Now don’t get me wrong, I can’t stand the self serving little oik, but the Registrar’s position is up for interview soon, and I can’t afford to lose out because they don’t think I’m a team player.

BB: SO THIS IS PURELY A CAREER MOVE?

Lara: [Hesitates] Yes. [Pauses, looks at her hands] OK, look, I… I just can’t stand the thought of being alone right now. Since Patrick’s… [sniffs] I just feel… [shakes her head and pulls herself together ] Can I go now? [Looks hopefully at the camera]

BB: ONE MORE QUESTION. WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT THE OUTSIDE WORLD?

Lara: [Laughs half heartedly] The same as I’ll be missing while I’m in here. Patrick.

BB: THANK YOU LARA, PLEASE SHOW IN THE NEXT CONTESTANT.

[Lara wipes her eyes with the heel of her hand as she gets up and leaves. Colette enters, see’s Lara is upset but doesn’t get the chance to say anything as the door closes between them]

BB: NAME?

Colette: Colette Griffiths

BB: OCCUPATION?

Colette: Senior staff nurse.

BB: MARITAL STATUS?

Colette: Married to Josh Griffiths.

BB: PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR REASON FOR JOINING THE BIG BROTHER HOUSE:

Colette: It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, isn’t it? I just think it sounds interesting. I mean, it’s addictive to watch, I just kept wondering what it would be like to be in here myself. I have to admit I’m a bit nervous about it, but I’ll be with Josh and my friends and colleagues, it’s not like I’m being bunged in a room with strangers. I’m quite looking forward to it actually.

BB: WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT THE OUTSIDE WORLD?

Colette: Natalie and the baby. I might not see them very often but I know I can call them up whenever, and in here I can’t. But it won’t be for long.

BB: PLEASE SHOW IN THE NEXT CONTESTANT, AND THANK YOU COLETTE.

[Colette gets up and walks out. Charlie enters warily, looking around the room for a few seconds before settling into the chair]

BB: NAME?

Charlie: Charlie Fairhead

BB: OCCUPATION?

Charlie: Clinical Nurse Manager of the Holby City Hospital Emergency Unit.

BB: MARITAL STATUS?

Charlie: Divorced, but dating Jan Goddard.

BB: PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR REASON FOR JOINING THE BIG BROTHER HOUSE:

Charlie: Jan thinks it’ll be a good team building exercise, and I suppose it beats wandering around in the woods like poor Mike had to…[Frowns as he remembers his friend’s accident]

BB: THOSE ARE JAN’S FEELINGS WHAT ARE YOUR OWN?

Charlie: I think… [rubs back of his head as he’s thinking] I think I see enough of these people at work. I think that the department will be in utter chaos with us all off. You know that they got in Danielle Brearly, the Sister over at St. Thomas’s to cover? I dread to think what state the place will be in by the time I escape from here!

BB: WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT THE OUTSIDE WORLD?

Charlie: Louis, my son. Work. I don’t know, I’m just going to miss having a semi-normal life, I suppose.

BB: THANK YOU CHARLIE. PLEASE SEND IN THE NEXT CONTESTANT.

Charlie: Right.

[Charlie leaves, Josh enters. He takes agood look at the chair before sitting on it]

Josh: Does this come from IKEA? I’m sure I saw one like it when I was looking at their kitchen unit’s the other day.

BB: [Clearly stumped for a second] UH, NAME?

Josh: Josh Griffiths

BB: OCCUPATION?

Josh: Paramedic with the Holby Ambulance Service.

BB: MARITAL STATUS?

Josh: Happily married thank you!

BB: PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR REASON FOR JOINING THE BIG BROTHER HOUSEHOLD?

Josh: Colette seemed under the impression that it was a good idea. I’m not so sure, but I suppose it can’t hurt, can it?

BB: IS THAT YOUR ONLY REASON?

Josh: Well, er, yes. Fin dropped out at the last minute and they needed a replacement. Colette was already on board and I would have missed her if she’d stayed in until the end. I’m willing to give it a go. I’ve been in worse situations!

BB: WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT THE OUTSIDE WORLD?

Josh: Driving. Fresh air. You know, getting out and about. I spend almost all day on the road. I’m not sure about how I’ll cope with being trapped in a house… [frowns] perhaps this isn’t such a good idea…

BB: OK, THANK YOU JOSH. PLEASE SEND IN THE NEXT CONTESTANT.

[Josh leaves, looking troubled, and Spencer enters. He stands ready by the chair]

BB: PLEASE SIT. [Spencer sits] NAME?

Spencer: Spencer, sir.

BB: SPENCER WHAT? AND THERE’S NO NEED TO CALL ME SIR.

Spencer: Sorry sir. It’s just Spencer though. It’s a bit of a long story.

BB: OK. OCCUPATION?

Spencer: Health Care Assistant in Casualty.

BB: MARITAL STATUS?

Spencer: I’m estranged from my wife. Another long story, sir.

BB: PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR REASON FOR JOING THE BIG BROTHER HOUSE:

Spencer: Ah, well, you see, I’m having a bit of a problem with my landlord. There was a bit of a disagreement over rent, and some… harsh words exchanged. I think it’ll be best to keep out of his way for while.

BB: WHAT WILL YOU MISS ABOUT THE OUTSIDE WORLD?

Spencer: I’ll be missing my family. I’m only just getting to know them again, especially my daughter Gilly. I hope they won’t think I’m abandoning them again [looks concerned]

BB: THANK YOU SPENCER, PLEASE SHOW IN THE NEXT CONTESTANT.

[Spencer leaves, and is almost knocked over as Jack bounces in to the room, and sits down, making himself comfortable]

BB: NAME?

Jack: Jack ‘the man’ Vincent.

BB: OCCUPATION?

Jack: Receptionist extraordinaire!

BB: MARITAL STATUS?

Jack: I’ve got my Nikki, and I don’t need anyone else! Unless Anna Kournikova should become available! [Winks and rubs his hands together]

BB: PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR REASON FOR JOINING THE BIG BROTHER HOUSEHOLD:

Jack: It sounds a right laugh! I watched it, last summer on TV, right, and they lazed about, took in some sun, got a bit frisky in the pool. It’s gotta be better than working! Nah, I’m going to be living the life of Reilly in here. And I’ll be entertaining all the ladies back at home, too. I’m telling you Big Bro mate, I’m going to be the best thing on telly since, well, since ever!

BB: WHAT WILL YOU MISS ABOUT THE OUTSIDE WORLD?

Jack: Easy. My music. I’m a top flight DJ you know, oh yeah. And all the clubs will be after me once I’m out of here and famous. But it’s going to be well hard not having any music in here [wipes his nose on the back of his hand] I just hope that Nikki won’t try to sing. She is so tone deaf!

BB: THANK YOU…

Jack: And, I’ll also miss Gran. [He smiles sheepishly] Well, I will.

BB: PLEASE SHOW IN THE NEXT CONTESTANT.

[Jack bounds back out, and Simon comes in, settling into the chair, and straightening his tie, smiling all the while]

BB: NAME?

Simon: Doctor Simon Kaminski

BB: OCCUPATION?

Simon: Soon to be Registrar, but currently SHO at Holby A&E.

BB MARITAL STATUS?

Simon: Young, free and single.

BB: PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR REASON FOR JOINING THE BIG BROTHER HOUSE:

Simon: It’s a management idea, isn’t it? So it’ll look good on my CV.

BB: IS THAT THE ONLY REASON?

Simon: [shrugs] yes. Although if I get to see Stoneface in the shower it’ll be a bonus.

BB: WHAT WILL YOU MISS ABOUT THE OUTSIDE WORLD?

Simon: My brother’s wedding plans. Which, I think you’ll appreciate, can only be a good thing!

BB: IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WISH TO ADD?

Simon: Nah. Let’s get on with it.

[Simon exits, and Tony enters and sits down]

BB: NAME?

Tony: Tony Vincent. Anthony, really, but I don’t like that.

BB: OCCUPATION?

Tony: EDA. That’s an Emergency Department Assistant.

BB: MARITAL STATUS?

Tony: Well, I’m hardly married am I?

BB: PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR REASON FOR JOINING THE BIG BROTHER HOUSE:

Tony: Jack made it sound like it could be a laugh. And I’d get to know my colleagues a bit better. Maybe one of them a lot better… [grins to himself]

BB: WHO ARE YOU REFERING TO?

Tony: [His grin fades as if he’s only just realised he was doing it] Oh, you know, just people in general. [Shrugs in what he hopes is a nonchalant fashion]

BB: WHAT WILL YOU MISS ABOUT THE OUTSIDE WORLD?

Tony: Dunno. Not yet anyway. My boyfriend and I have just split up, so I won’t be missing him. And I won’t miss having to do all the disgusting jobs at work either. I dunno. [shrugs]

[Tony walks out, winking at Dillon as he passes him. Dillon looks slightly perturbed by this and is glad when the door shuts. He sits down looking slightly uneasy]

BB: NAME?

Dillon: Dillon Cahill

BB: OCCUPATION?

Dillon: Staff Nurse

BB: MARITAL STATUS?

Dillon: Single

BB: PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR REASON FOR JOINING THE BIG BROTHER HOUSE:

Dillon: It’s interesting. I do a lot of work with people, as a nurse and as a Samaritan, and I’ve always been kinda fascinated by the psychology of Big Brother. You know, you stick a bunch of people in together and see if the make friends or end up killing each other. Figuratively speaking. It’s like an all singing all dancing sociology experiment. And it could be fun.

BB: WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT THE OUTSIDE WORLD?

Dillon: People I guess. I mean, we’ll all be a bit sick of each other by the end of this, I think I’m going to miss fresh perspectives, and meeting new people. I also feel a bit bad about letting down the Samaritans to come here, but I hope that what I take away from this experience will help me in both my jobs.
